RUSSELL, Bertrand ( 1872-1970). English mathematician and philosopher. He met Conrad in September 1913 when he visited Capel House with Lady Ottoline Morrell (see above). Later in the same month Conrad visited Russell in Cambridge. They corresponded, and Russell named his son John Conrad and expressed the wish that Conrad might regard himself as a kind of unofficial godfather. The Autobiography of Bertrand Russell, 1872-1914 (1967) contains a very striking passage on Conrad (pp. 207-1 0) in which Russell states that 'My relation to Joseph Conrad was unlike any other that I have ever had ....

Like another exile-novelist, Vladimir Nabokov, Conrad never owned a house; and though in Conrad's case the chronic shortage of money must have been a factor, it may also have been that he felt a disinclination to try to send down roots in a country that was not his native land, even though he had become a British subject as early as 1886.
